Honoring the Queen of Regency Romance

Today is Georgette Heyer’s birthday! Georgette Heyer is hailed by scores of fans as being the quintessential Regency Romance novelist. Most people credit her for creating not on the genre called Historical Romance, but its subgenre, Regency Romance. Heyer had a  brother who was chronically ill, so to amuse him, she wrote a series of stories. Reportedly, Jane Austen inspired Heyer to write stories that took place in England during the Regency Era. Since she…

Regency Ballrooms

I recently stumbled onto a little-known fact that it was a custom among the very best houses of the ton to have elaborate pictures on the floors of their ballrooms (or drawing rooms converted to ballrooms) made out of chalk. Yes, chalk. This appears to have been done only by the wealthiest of hostesses, and probably most commonly done for special occasions. Regency author and researcher, Kathryn Kane, in her article entitled The now vanished…

A Thought for August

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of the summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns…

Out with the old and in with the new

Good news! Two of my old books are being re-edited, getting new covers, and will be re-released very soon. How soon, I don’t know just yet, but I hope The Stranger She Married will be back in circulation within the next few weeks. At least that’s the plan. Oh, and I’ve made a few minor changes to it, so if you’ve already read it, you might enjoy seeing what I’ve changed. The second book in…

In His Hands, a book review

I don’t normally do book reviews on this site, but every once in a while, something touches me in such a profound way that I feel I must share it.  IN HIS HANDS by Jenny Hess is a nonfiction book, probably classified as “self help.” It is the story of a woman whose five-year-old son died suddenly in an accident with her husband, how they dealt with the tragedy, how they picked up the broken…

Regency Gentleman’s Fashions; the cravat

Any well dressed, fashionable man living in Regency England prided himself on having a perfectly tied cravat, or necktie. Some were so fussy about their cravats that they went through a dozen starched neckcloths until they got exactly the look they desired.  Some gentlemen changed the knots for the occasion, others prided themselves on having one particular signature look. The kind of knots a man used often said much about him–the more difficult knots would…

King George VI’s Coronation

Regency is a term which applies to short time in Great Britain beginning in 1811 when time King George III was declared legally mad, or insane, and his son and heir was named Regent to rule in his stead. Many experts believe that George, also known as “Mad King George” III had porphyria which affected his sight, his hearing, and eventually his sanity. He’d suffered with bouts of madness for years but his final collapse…
